We asked Teamet, one of the youth employees who is currently enrolled in our work programming, for her thoughts about public art and community. Here’s what she had to say:
My name is Titi, and I’m 17. The guy who I work with through King County put me in contact with this job. It’s fun. We come in and eat some snacks, and then we get to work! I enjoy painting the murals and learning how to do designs and stuff like that because I already knew how to use the brushes and stuff, but now I feel better about everything else.
Before I came here I always used to look at the paintings outside, especially the one you guys did by my line and say, “who did these?” And I always wanted to be involved and do something like that, and now here I am doing one.
The art that I’m into is poetry, poems. I’ve been writing poetry since third grade, since I was a little girl. It’s the best way to express myself. In the future, I’d like to have a good job that pays a good amount of money to keep me on my feet, and my family.
