Urban ArtWorks’ Mural Apprentice Program (MAP) in Kirkland is offered in partnership with the Kirkland Arts Center (KAC). This program brings together young artists, skilled Teaching Artists, and local community partners to create murals that inspire connections and honor their voices. Urban ArtWorks has offered MAP since 1995 with partners throughout the Puget Sound region.
Cultivating Creativity and Connection
Urban ArtWorks and Kirkland Arts Center began offering this MAP session in the summer of 2024. Since that time, the partnership has produced two murals, each with its own unique design and impact. During the summer session, apprentices collaborated with Teaching Artists Natalia Sotelo and Bry Sutherland to create a mural that embraced the theme “Where Art Connects Us,” for KAC. The cohort worked closely with Rob Kmiec, KAC’s Director of Education, to refine their ideas and align the design with the Center’s mission. Rob’s insights provided invaluable guidance, encouraging the youth to think deeply about how their art could build community and connection.
“It was a really fulfilling experience, I really enjoy making art and it means a lot that the art we made here will be appreciated by others.” – Youth Artist, Summer 2024 Kirkland MAP
In the fall of 2024, another MAP cohort, led by Teaching Artists Carmel Mercado and Charles Conner, designed and painted a mural for the Center for Human Services (CHS). The artwork welcomes visitors to the Substance Use Department and Family Support Department, aiming to inspire hope and healing. This project gave youth a unique opportunity to create art with a meaningful purpose, showcasing the power of creativity in addressing community needs.
“I feel like I have learned what it truly means to work passionately as a group to achieve a common goal and create something positive.” – Youth Artist, Fall 2024 Kirkland MAP
A Partnership Built on Shared Values
Our partnership with the Kirkland Arts Center has been central to the program’s success. With its commitment to fostering creativity and accessibility in the arts, KAC provides a space for youth to explore their artistic potential as they complete the MAP. Youth in the MAP work with professional Teaching Artists. Through visual art curriculum, mentorship, and real-world design experiences, MAP participants gain valuable skills and confidence that extend far beyond the art studio. Urban ArtWorks is grateful for the incredible leadership of the Teaching Artists and the enthusiasm of the youth apprentices.
Looking Ahead
Urban ArtWorks and Kirkland Arts Center plan to host another MAP cohort in the spring of 2025. We’re excited to see how the MAP will evolve and inspire future cohorts in Kirkland and on the East Side.
We prioritize working with BIPOC, LGBTQ, and youth who qualify for free and reduced lunch. If you are a young person interested in this program, or if you work for a youth-serving organization that is interested in partnering with Urban ArtWorks, please contact us.
