Urban ArtWorks is launching a new full-day summer camp in 2026! We’ve expanded the curriculum from our previous camps, held from 2021-2024 with Parkour Visions at The Phinney Center. The new curriculum is specifically designed for campers 8-12 to focus a full week on creative exercises and mural making. Each week follows a different theme. We talked with Lis Rafailedes, Elementary Program Manager, who shared more about the new camp.

How do you help children who arrive feeling shy or unsure find their confidence here?

“We know that the first day can feel big, and be accompanied by big emotions! We start with low-pressure icebreakers and small group activities so kids don’t feel put on the spot. Because we’re creating art together, there’s no ‘right’ answer — and that really helps shy kids relax. As they see their ideas show up on the mural, you can literally watch their confidence grow.”

What changes do you typically see in campers from the first day to the last day?

“On the first day, some campers are a little reserved and figuring things out. By the last day, they’re giving input, making creative decisions, encouraging each other, and feeling proud of what they’ve made. There’s always this huge sense of ownership and accomplishment- especially when they see the finished mural.”

What kinds of friendships do children build here?

“Because they’re working toward a shared goal (creating a mural together) friendships form naturally. They problem-solve together, share supplies, help each other paint, and celebrate progress. It’s less about competition and more about collaboration, and that creates really meaningful connections. One of my favorite parts of teaching camp in the past, was the natural inside jokes that come up. It seems surprising, but in one short week, we usually collectively have something to laugh and joke about.”

How do you balance fun and structure in a way that helps young artists grow?

“We have a clear daily rhythm-warm-ups, focused mural time, breaks, playtime, and reflection- so kids know what to expect. Within that structure, there’s tons of creativity and play. That balance helps them feel secure while still giving them the freedom to explore.”

What does a typical day look like, will campers work independently or with teamwork?

“Campers get the best of both worlds. They brainstorm and sketch individually, so their voice is heard. Then we bring ideas together and collaborate on the larger mural. There are also other hands-on art projects and active games woven throughout the day, so it’s creative, active, and engaging from start to finish.”

How do you and your team ensure parents feel informed and confident while their child is at camp?

“We prioritize communication. Parents receive clear information before camp begins, and we share updates and photos throughout the week when possible. We’re always available for questions at drop-off and pick-up — we want families to feel just as supported as their kids do.”

If you were speaking directly to a parent who’s on the fence, what would you tell them about why this camp is worth it?

“I would say this: if your child is creative, curious, or even a little unsure of themselves–this is such a powerful experience. They’re not just making art. They’re learning collaboration, confidence, and creative problem-solving. And they leave proud of something they helped create. That’s really special.”
